The Lost Palace
Late last summer at Great Ashfield House, three filmmakers came across a letter in a drawer. The letter was dated 1943 and written by a WW2 Land Girl. In the letter, the Land Girl described her experience visiting Great Ashfield House to record its contribution to the war effort. Entering the grounds, she wrote that she entered a world that seemed to exist outside of time, a “lost palace.” There she encountered three extraordinary women, Mrs Hollond and her daughters. Our strange little ghost story is inspired by the meeting of these two worlds.
The Lost Palace is our first short film and the beginning of our venture into narrative filmmaking. Shot over three days in Suffolk, our aim was to craft a film that was visually compelling and resonant with the period in which it is set. We shot on an ARRI LF (Large Format) in Open Gate to achieve the 4:3 aspect ratio, imbuing the film with a distinctive and cinematic aesthetic whilst staying true to the period photographs unearthed in the house where the story unfolds. These old photographs were the guiding force for our film's sets, costumes, and props.
