GABRIEL O’SHEA
“There are no beautiful surfaces without a terrible depth.” - Nietzsche
Encouraging contemplation on contemporary violence, religion and technology, Gabriel O'Shea’s works operate in the space between the figurative and the conceptual. This is a fragile balance in which visions of peace remain rooted in control and brutality.
He seeks to provoke skepticism in the viewer, exposing and challenging previously held beliefs on contemporary culture. He wants the viewer to come to terms with the fragility, doubts and fears of the self and our surroundings in the digital age. His artistic approach balances the figurative and the conceptual, and the violent and the peaceful. Unrestricted by material, Gabriel explores the decadence and technology that surround our present through mediums that include wax, concrete, resin, paint, and photography.
