DANIEL ODIER

In collaboration with The Ant Project, an art activist collective based in Mexico City, we spent the day with spiritual teacher and artist Daniel Odier. Daniel teaches Tandava, a type of Tantric meditation rooted in the Hindu god Shiva's dance of destruction and creation. For Daniel, spirituality and art are one, the gestures and flow of Tandava dance connect to the strokes of his paint.

In documentary film production, you often do not have the luxury of time to shoot scenes as you would for a scripted editorial film. With Daniel, we quickly realised that the filming had to follow his rhythm, and he is an action painter!

Once we had captured a curated interview, our camera operator prepared to film Daniel creating a painting in one take. To do this, the camera was rigged in a handheld setup and mounted with a wide-angle lens to allow the quick focus changes during the sequence.

Daniel finished the painting in a matter of minutes. Our filmmaker took a few steps back to get a better look, and it was only then that he understood the power of the artwork.
